Huawei allegedly working on a double-edged curved AMOLED smartphone, with a little help from Samsung

According to a new rumor from China, Huawei is taking a page out of Samsung’s playbook and is working on a double-edged curved AMOLED smartphone of its own. At the moment, the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge and the Galaxy S6 edge+ are the only two smartphones in the world that come with curved AMOLED displays, but it looks like Samsung is ready to let other smartphone manufacturers make use of its curved AMOLED technology.

The source of this information, which has a pretty good track record at reporting on upcoming handsets from China-based smartphone makers, says that the Huawei smartphone in question will come with a Samsung-made curved AMOLED display. The display is said to run a resolution of 1440 by 2560 pixels (QHD), but the size of the panel remains unknown for the time being. Allegedly, Huawei will launch the handset in the first half of 2016.

One thing to bear in mind is that Huawei has yet to launch a smartphone with a display that runs at a resolution higher than 1080 by 1920 pixels (FHD). In the past, Huawei said that QHD panels do not improve the viewing experience enough compared to FHD panels to warrant the extra stress on a smartphone’s battery and chipset. If this new rumor turns out to be accurate, however, it looks like the company had a change of heart faced with the current market conditions.

The source also claims that Huawei is hoping to manufacture as many as 3 million curved AMOLED smartphones a month, suggesting that the company has big plans for its first curved-edge smartphone.
